How Membership Discounts Are Applied

When setting up a membership rule for court bookings, two settings control exactly how a discount is applied: Discount Application and Valid For. These are often the most misunderstood part of membership configuration, so this guide walks through each setting with consistent, worked examples.

Example used throughout this guide: A court booking costs €25 in total, split evenly across 4 players — so each player's individual portion is €25 ÷ 4 = €6.25. The membership discount in these examples is 25%.

This controls what the discount is calculated against — the player's individual share of the court, or the total court price.

The discount (and any free hours benefit) is applied only to the member's own €6.25 portion — never to the full €25 court price.

The member's portion is €6.25. A 25% discount is applied to that €6.25, not to the full €25.

The free hours benefit also applies only to the member's portion, not the full court.

When both benefits are configured, only one applies per hour — never both. The free hour benefit takes priority: any hour covered by a free hour is free, and the percentage discount is not additionally applied to it. Any remaining hours beyond what's covered by free hours are charged at full price, with no discount applied.

The discount (and any free hours benefit) is applied to the full €25 court price, regardless of how many players are splitting it. This only makes sense when the member is paying for the entire court themselves — see the Valid For setting below for how this connects to split vs. single payments.

This setting controls which booking payment types the discount applies to, and only appears when Player Portion is selected (Total Court Charges already assumes the member is paying for the whole court).

The discount applies only when the member is paying their own €6.25 portion as part of a split booking. Each player pays their own share independently, and the discount only affects the member's own portion. What the other players pay, or whether they have their own discounts, has no effect on the member's discount.

Example: 4 players split a €25 court. The member pays their €6.25 portion and gets 25% off (saving €1.56). The other 3 players pay their portions separately at full price.

This extends the discount to cover a scenario where one player pays for the entire group in a single transaction, rather than each player paying separately. If multiple players in that booking each hold their own discount, all of those individual discounts are factored into the one combined payment.

Example: 4 players are added to a €25 court booking, and all 4 happen to have a 25% membership discount. Instead of splitting the payment, one player pays for all four together. Because the setting is Both, each player's 25% discount is still applied to their respective €6.25 portion within that single combined payment — so the total amount charged reflects all four discounts.
